A Gut Based Approach to Chronic Disease Management

One of the major reasons that standard of care leaves many patients dissatisfied is because there are less than complete approaches to chronic care. Chronic conditions are often managed exclusively through symptom management and suppression, rather than trying to find the physiologic irritant that is contributing to the chronicity of conditions. Chronic conditions are more often than not driven by an inflammatory process. One of the critical organs contributing to inflammation is the gut. More and more data comes forth supporting the role of gut based inflammation, the microbiome, and optimal absorption of nutrients all of which are centered in gut based health. Standard of care often ignores looking for inflammatory triggers such as foods or gut based infections that are at the heart of not only Crohn’s, Colitis, and IBS but also contribute to depression, pain, weight gain and fatigue. Understanding gut based therapies and diagnosis is pivotal to functional medicine. This quarterly focus will be on management of gut based inflammation and how that can help with so many far-reaching concerns.
