After growing up in India and while attending University in Canada, Mandy Walia-Bhatia, DC, was on her way to earn her PhD until an accident that left her in excruciating pain completely changed the trajectory of her life and career. At 17, Mandy slipped on a patch of ice outside her home which resulted in years of back pain, futile doctors’ visits, unfilled prescriptions, and requiring assistance with menial tasks such as carrying her books throughout campus.
“I couldn’t sit down, I couldn’t touch my toes, I even had to take my exams standing up. I struggled for three years.”
When someone recommended she see a chiropractor, Mandy discovered a whole new world in the health industry that she found fascinating. This discovery not only led to pain relief that she described as “one of those miracle stories” but also provoked her decision to become a Doctor of Chiropractic.
“I was headed toward my PhD and people just couldn’t understand how I could give up what I had. I didn’t know what a chiropractor was. We didn’t have them in India, but I was inspired and started applying to different chiropractic schools in California.”
Upon graduating, Mandy interviewed with several chiropractic offices in San Diego and had qualms about each of them and expressed this to her husband, Ameet, who offered support.
“I could not believe those offices! That was not my vision. I told my husband I wanted to open my own office and he said, if we don’t make it, we will recover. So, Ameet and I started together.”
With Ameet by her side, Mandy opened a multi-specialty practice but needed help escaping the insurance regulated system. She found FPC shortly after and experienced a significant growth spurt when it came to communicating with her clients.
“I had to dig deep inside of me to get into that empathy part of it with them. I couldn’t just tell them you need to do this now, I had to help them understand that it was possible.”
Although Mandy’s first year with FPC consisted of her selling her multi-specialty practice in order to open the beloved Gain Wellness Center we have come to associate her with, when explaining her greatest challenges, she alluded to getting through to her clients to help them achieve wellness.
“I had to learn the art of communication. I’m an extrovert and was good at talking but would get annoyed when they wouldn’t want to move, and also annoyed when I would let them walk away, so I had to figure out how to put myself in their shoes. I was sympathetic but was lacking empathy and had to learn the difference. This was the most difficult thing I went through.”
Mandy has had her share of ups and downs during her time with FPC, and she attributed her struggles to her mindset. But she hustled, she kept listening to her coaches, and eventually, her psyche followed.
“I was following everything, I was a good student, I was showing up to all of the webinars, but I had to get my mindset corrected which FPC helped me with, and I work at it every day.”
FPC helped Mandy mesh her effort with her mindset to establish success and while we discussed her time with FPC and the progress of her business, she became emotional and her support system quickly stepped in.
“I’m sorry, she is crying right now,” Ameet said. “Can I say something?”
Having been by her side though the twists, turns, and even during interviews, Ameet explained how Mandy’s biggest hurdle was letting go of fear.
“The biggest thing was when she stopped living in fear,” Ameet said. Both of us depend on this and I have put more effort into learning the FPC model than I have in anything else, so I have grown a lot too,” he added. “When she stopped living in fear of failure things just started to click.”
“FPC has made Ameet and I professionally in sync,” Mandy said.
Mandy described how her life was good prior to joining FPC, but now her life has meaning. She has been hitting her goals consistently and offered up some words of wisdom to fellow practice owners.
“Put in the work. Implement every step, the way they are telling us to do it because anytime you don’t, it’s going to hold you back. The sooner you can overcome your objections, the sooner you will get to your goal. Trust the system,” Mandy said.
Ameet echoed, “trust the system and the process.”
